Somebody else’s NPO

Today was a day to volunteer with another Not for Profit (NPO).  It is weird to do this as suddenly you are helping others when your day job is helping others.  Let that thought soak in for a bit.  I was helping the animal rescue that my spouse (Michelle) is a volunteer with (I am volun-told is the typical joke).  In the other sectors you can help the community by going and volunteering in the 3rd Sector.  When you are in the 3rd Sector no one from the Private or Government sectors calls and asks if you would like to do team building, strategic planning, payroll, sales, electrical engineering, welding, serving the lunch rush, or frac work.  It just does not happen the other way, maybe it should?

I think there is a value statement here somewhere.  The best are in the 3rd because they are unable to try and help the other sectors grow and thrive any longer.  Foundations, hospitals, schools and other critical needs are in the 3rd Sector (Canada they fall under the charity related laws).  You see where I am going here?  Many people have tried to help the other sectors be successful with limited results (have you seen governments lately, that can not be considered value for the money).  People have tried, and because the other sectors are often seen wasting time, funds, and other resources the people in the 3rd have just walked away.  The attitude might be ‘there is no hope for the others so lets just do it right and help people in the process’.

By helping another NPO today I think I helped (by holding dogs) students in grade 4 think about the other things in life.  Michelle shared her experience, photos and emotions of being a volunteer among volunteers who are focused on making the world better for abandoned and injured dogs.  Volunteerism and doing things for others by getting involved in community.  Today’s kids were amazing and had so many great questions about dogs, animals with dogs, foster experiences, what dogs are better with what types of foster or home environments, and why it makes a difference.  It was also fun to hear their stories about their furry brothers and sisters.

Generocity and altruism is a kernel of life, let’s nurture it’s growth.

Oh, and neither dogs pee’d on the floor in the school.  😉
